Several years ago I began looking around to find a business coach for myself to help me refine my own skills. Unfortunately why I found was that the vast majority of 'business coaches' were:

1. Former corporate employees who decided to start working for themselves by becoming a coach. There only experience as an entrepreneur was starting their coaching business! This seemed a bit too much like 'the blind leading the blind'...

2. Academics who used their PH D's or MBA's as their main coaching credential. After having employed several PH D's and MBA's in my companies I have learned that there is a very low correlation between academic prowess and entrepreneurial success.

What I wanted was someone who had been 'in the trenches' themselves and gone from nothing to their success. I never did find a coach - maybe I did not look hard enough.

There are two factors at work that led me to develop this coaching approach:

1. The greatest difficulty for an entrepreneur is having to be good at so many different things. Not only do you need to be a bit of a venture capitalist and risk taker but you also need to know about marketing, sales, websites, accounting, payroll, staffing, HR, branding, customer service, etc.
2. As the cliche goes, "We are only as strong as our weakest link".  As I have watched other entrepreneurs start and fail I noticed that they were often extremely skilled in one area of business but had neglected one or two key different areas. These weak links led to their business's demise.

Inevitably, as business owners, we all fall short in one area or another. Exacerbating these weaknesses, we all tend to continue to strengthen what we are good at and avoid working on our weaker points. This is precisely where an objective coach can step in and break up any patterns and bring an entrepreneurs skills more into balance.
